Ford's EcoBoost Technology : First Time in India

Ford India is planning to introduce its EcoBoost technology in its new models coming to India which will increase the fuel efficiency at least by 20 percent. The engine will also have lower carbon dioxide emission at least by 15 percent. The new technology will enable Ford engines to comply with the new emission norms.

Initially they will go for the regular technology to develop 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine to benefit from government’s policy of lower excise on such engine sizes and introduce the much expensive EcoBoost engines in the long-term.

This new technology has already been launched in the US where it powers the compact cars as well as commercial trucks sold in the US market. EcoBoost uses gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology.

Ford currently manufacturers 1.6 Duratec petrol engines and 1.4 Duratorq diesel engines which are present in its sedans like Fiesta and Ikon and Fusion hatchback model.

Ford's Small Car in 2010

Ford India is all set to set in motion its news small car by early 2010. The company is currently testing around 300 epitomes of the small car on the road. The new small car will share its platform with its European and Australian siblings and will have 85 percent localization. This will help Ford to check the cost and place the car competitively in the Indian market which is one of the most price sensitive markets in the world.

The new small car is being primarily designed for the Indian customers to suit the Indian driving conditions and the Indian roads. The company intends to launch 1.2L petrol engine to get the excise duty cut and probably 1.5L diesel engine.

Ford has sustained the credit crisis in the US market and Ford India has already invested nearly USD 900 million in India. This includes its $500 million investments on the new engine plant and the small car project as well as ramping up of the vehicle assembling capacity from 0.1 million units to 0.2 million units. The company has also recently signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu state government which will see fresh investments of $400 million in the auto sector. The new plant will have a production capacity of manufacturing 100,000 units annually. It will also be able to produce 250,000 engines each year.

Ford India Counts Big on Indian Market

Ford India recently got an approval for investing $500 million for setting up Indian operations and their further expansion. The parent company Ford Motors faced economic crisis and did not file for bankruptcy. Ford India is quite eager to enter the small car market in India where it currently lacks presence.

According to Ford India, the Indian operations did not receive any distress calls from either Ford Motors in US or Ford Asian center operations in Bangkok. The company had already announced investments worth $500 million earlier and there was no intimation to the Indian operations to hold them back. The company still sticks to its original plans for India as there had been considerable slow down in the market but definitely no meltdown like the other markets.

Ford considers the small car launch to be a critical part of its overall strategy to grab larger market share and strengthen its presence in India. Ford intends to retain its brand image in India thus will go ahead with its original plans. Having a small car in India is a necessity to be present here successfully.

Grab Discount Offers in June from Car Manufacturers in India

June seems to be the season of heavy discounts for Indian car buyers. Auto manufacturers are offering varying discounts across all their models to lure the Indian customers. May-June this year beat the December discounts already. Car companies are offering discounts starting from Rs. 5000 to up to Rs. 1 lakh on their cars in India.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited is offering discounts on nearly all the cars in its product portfolio. It is offering discount of Rs. 13,000 on Omni and Maruti 800, 35,000 on WagonR, 19,000 on Alto, 37,000 on Zen Estilo and 25,000 on SX4. The new model Maruti A-Star is also cheaper by Rs. 24,000 this month. However, latest and popular models do not have such attractive discount packages. Maruti Swift is available at a discount of Rs. 5000 only and there is no discount on the latest model Maruti Ritz.

I know all you purchasers wonders that how it happens? But there is no any tact or magic. It is the decision of car manufacturers that hefty price discounts on one particular car model can help give focus on that model and increase sales for a brief period of time. So, I think it is a good time to buy your beloved car at home.

Other auto makers are also offering discounts ranging from Rs. 10,000 to up to one lakh on their cars. General Motors, Ford India and Tata Motors have their cars lined up with various discounts across their product portfolio. Hyundai is already offering an exchange program to its customers to upgrade their cars to a bigger car without changing the EMI. “Monsoon always sees some discounting but this time the cuts are steeper,” said Rajiv Dube, president-passenger car division, Tata Motors.

So even before the monsoon in India, its already raining discounts in the auto sector. With additional excise duty cut benefits, cars couldn’t have been cheaper before.

Maruti Suzuki's New Launch The Ritz - BS-IV Emission Norms

As Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading car manufacturer, gears up for the set up of its Ritz hatchback, its second launch in less than six months, other companies are also gearing up to gainsay the make with their flashy and stylish hatchbacks.

The premium compact car segment, classified as above Rs 4.5 lakh, will be abuzz over the next year with launches expected from almost all other car makers — Hyundai Motors, Honda Siel Cars (HSCI), Toyota Kirloskar, Fiat Auto, Volkswagen India and Ford India — too.

The Ritz, which Maruti will launch on Friday, will have a new K12M, 1.2 litre petrol engine, exacted to be more fuel effective while being low on discharge. It will also be the first car on Indian roads to have an engine that is compliant with the BS-IV emission norms. It will be Maruti’s eighth small car and is awaited to be priced at about Rs 4.5-5 lakh, although the company has been closelipped on this.

Honda will follow with the launch of the Jazz around June. Because Jazz shares its platform with its stylish but bigger cousin, the City, company officials say it will be priced just a bit below the latter, making it India’s most expensive hatchback.

Jnaneswar Sen, senior V-P (marketing), HSCI, replied “In international markets, the Honda Jazz is priced more than the Honda City. However, due to the benefit of excise duty structure in India, expect the Jazz to be priced slightly lower than the City.” Smaller cars attract less duty in India. The City carries a price tag of Rs 8.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Italian car maker Fiat will proceed with the introduction of the much-awaited Grande Punto a few weeks later. This car will be Fiat’s second offering in the compact segment, after the Palio, but will be priced higher than it. Rajeev Kapoor, president and CEO, Fiat India Automobiles, said, “The B+ (premium compact) segment is growing at a much faster rate than others. This segment will see the most action and we as a company see great opportunity there. We want to become a volume player with this car.”

This segment will be further explored by Hyundai Motors India (HMIL) when it launches the diesel version of the i20 by the end of the year. The company already has three compact cars — Santro, i10 and the Getz — in the market. HMIL had initially planned to sell about 1,000 units of the i20 in India every month but the demand has surged to almost double that. Hyundai is expecting a further increase in demand with the introduction of a diesel engine.

Market sources say German carmaker Volkswagen is planning to advance the launch of the Polo hatchback to the end of this calendar year from the earlier announced date of early 2010. Though the company’s dealers are not informed about the likely price tag, the car is planned to meet a scheduled launch of December 2009, they say. However, there was no confirmation from the company.

Ford Motor Company of the US will also bring its hatchback to India in early 2010. The vehicle, which is expected to be an upper-B segment car, will be pitted against the models of Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors with high localisation content. The compact car will come in both petrol and diesel options.

Experts say the increased focus by car makers on the premium compact segment was expected as the transition to small but premium cars has already started in most developed auto markets.
