Tata Motors Reveals the Bolt Hatchback

Tata Motors finally revealed to the public, the hatchback they had condenamed as the Falcon 4. Bolt, as it will now be called, made eyes turn in the sparking blue colour that it sported. It shared the limelight with the Tata compact sedan, codenamed Falcon 5, now christened as the Tata Zest.

This next-generation Global car from Tata Motors showcases the new DNA of the company and boasts of newness in terms of design (DesigNext), drivablity (DriveNext) speed and represents, accroding to the company, a winner's attitude. it comes with several segment first features and employs a new design language for the interiors as well as the exteriors.

The Bolt Hatchback is built on an updated version of the Tata Vista's X1 platform but is completely independent of the car's features. The Bolt features aggressive frontal styling, new grille and sleeker, sharper headlights. The rear has some changes as well.

The tail in the Bolt comes in a more wing-shaped design and the car also does not sport the vertically stacked tail lights of the Indica. The hatchback, however, does not have daytime running lights in front. It will be powered by the company's newly announced 1.2 litre turbochanged petrol Revotron engine that develops 85bhp.

Zest Sedan from Tata Motors

In what can be only described as an aggressive launch strategy, Tata Motors has unveiled not one but two all-new cars; the dynamically desinged Bolt Hatchback and the equally striking looking Zest compact sedan.

Talking about the Bolt Hatchback, the Zest gets a new design language. It is a result of the collaborative design inputs from the three Tata Motors design studios in Pune, Coventry (UK) and Turin (Italy). The car reportedly comes with several segment-first features such as projector headlamps, LED tail lamps and all-new HARMAN infotainment system.

Perfectly designed and developed to please the market and on an enhanced X1 platform, the Zest is an important model for Tata as it marks a strategic shift for Tata towards a global portfolio of cars designed to offer high performance and connectivity.

Delhi Auto Expo 2010 : Tata Motors

Fiat and Tata Motors jointly participated at the 9th Delhi Auto Expo in 2008 when Tata Motors unveiled world’s cheapest car – Tata Nano. This time Tata Motors intends to keep up expectations of auto critics as well as the customers. The company is still tight-lipped about its upcoming launches or concept models and has kept everything under wraps.

Tata Motors is expected to showcase its much awaited crossover Indicruz at the upcoming auto show in Delhi. “Tata Indicruz will be showcased at the Auto Expo in New Delhi January 5, 2010”, SG Saksena, head of Utility Vehicles Product Group, had said on the sidelines of the launch of Sumo Grande MK II.

The model has been designed with extensive design inputs from London-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC). “Our engineers have been working hard at getting the best features and you will see the result at the Auto Expo in New Delhi”, Saksena said. It was first unveiled at the 75th Geneva Motors Show in 2005. It will be the first multi-purpose vehicle and cross-over of its existing three models in India.

Nano May Rule out the Indian Rural Market

Nano is likely to replace M800 and Omni in rural India and is likely to dominate the Indian roads owing to the fact that the new emission norms in India will be enforced from April 1, 2010. The existing models of Maruti 800 and Omni are not compliant with the new BS-IV norms which may force the M800 off the road. The new BS-IV compliant model from Maruti will be available only by end of 2011. Meanwhile, the absence of M800 will give added leverage to Nano in the market.

“This (absence of Maruti 800 and Omni) would mean no direct competition to Nano. The important question is whether Tata Motors would be able to manufacture enough units of Nano that would meet the demand.” said Kapil Arora, Partner (Automobile), Ernst & Young.

Tata Nano is already a raging hit amongst Indian customers and people are anxiously waiting for the models to be available on road. However, one of the drawbacks of Nano is that its mother plant is still not operational and will be completed towards the end of 2009. Full capacity production at the plant will begin only after the plant is completed which means Nano is also likely to miss out on the crucial lead time it was supposed to gain over Maruti models.

Tata Motors has reported loss of Rs. 2500 crores last year largely due to its luxury models and its acquisitions. In order to cover the loss, the company will need to sell at least 2.5 lakh units of the Nano to make money from the world’s cheapest car. This figures is not too difficult looking at the booking figures and purchasing power of Indian customers.

You have to wait for JLR Brands in India

Tata Motors is planning to sell only a modest number of its luxury brand cars in India this calendar year. It aims to sell around 100-120 units in India which is a modest number. The Tata/JLR official did not specifically point out the numbers for the first year instead commented “We are definitely looking at a certain number, but it is too small to talk about,” Mr Rajiv Dubey, President (Passenger Car Division), Tata Motors. “The company had earlier conducted a market study and found that JLR would sell around 120 units in the first year. However, it will wait for a month after the launch and analyse market response to finalise its import plans,” pointed the industry sources.

Tata Motors opened its first Jaguar-Land Rover showroom in Ceejay House, Worli, Mumbai on Sunday 28th June. The company will be retailing the cars through its premium car division and will sell Jaguar XF, XFR and XKR and Land Rover’s Discovery 3 and Range Rover models.

According to the Bob Grace, Director (Overseas Operations), Land Rover, it takes 12 weeks for a car to reach India thus the company will carry the stock according to the market demand. It may keep the cars at the customs warehouse till it receives confirmed orders which would prevent the company to pay the heavy customs duty on the imported cars.

Air Car From Tata Motors

Tata Motors, India's largest automotive company, on Feb. 5, 2007 announced that it has signed an agreement with Moteur Development International (MDI) of France, inventors of the car, to develop a car that runs on compressed air, thus making it very economical to run and be almost totally pollution free. This article in Rediff India Abroad and the MDI website gives further details.

The air engine has 4 two-stage pistons, i.e. 8 compression and/or expansion chambers on one crankshaft. The pistons work in two stages: one motor stage and one intermediate stage of compression/expansion. They have two functions: to compress ambient air and refill the storage tanks; and to make successive expansions (reheating air with ambient thermal energy) thereby approaching isothermic expansion. It has injection similar to normal engines, but uses a special crankshaft and pistons, which remain at top dead center for about 70 degrees of the crankshaft's cycle; this allows more power to be developed in the engine. The engine is powered by compressed air, stored in a carbon-fiber tank containing 90 cubic meters (3178 cubic feet) of air at 30 MPa (4500 psi).

The expansion of this air pushes the pistons and creates movement. The atmospheric temp. is used to re-heat the engine and increase the range.

The cars have the following characteristics:

• Are light weight vehicle that can reach speeds up to 220 kmph.

• MDI's vehicle's have fiberglass bodies which makes them light, silent urban car.

• The vehicles do not have normal speed gages. Instead, they will have a small computer screen

• Both ends of the seat belt are anchored to the vehicles floor for greater safety.

• The vehicle's uses a patented electric system that makes the car 20 kilos lighter and considerably quieter.

• There are no keys - just an access card that can be read by the car from your pocket.

• In the single energy mode MDI cars consume around US$1.00 (Rs 45) every 60 miles (100 km).

• There is no pollution from the car.

• The vehicle's driving range is close to twice that of the most advanced electric cars (from 200 to 180 miles (300 km) or 8 hours of operation).

• The recharging of the car will be done at gas stations in 2 to 3 minutes at a price of Rs 90, once the market is developed.

• The car also has a small compressor that can be connected to an electrical network (220V or 380V) and will recharged the tanks completely in 3 or 4 hours.

• The car's oil (a liter of vegetable) only needs to be changed every 50,000 km.

• The temperature of the exhaust is between 0 and 15 degrees below zero and can be used for air conditioning of the car.

The car will be produced in both a single engine compressed air cars, the MiniCAT and CityCAT and a dual engine hybrid, a compressed air engine plus a multi-fuel internal combustion engine.

The hybrid has been conceived as much for the city as the open road and will be available in all MDI vehicles. The engines will work exclusively with compressed air while it is running under 50 km/h in urban areas. But when the car is running at speeds over 50 km/h, the engines will switch to fuel mode. The engine will be able to use gasoline, biodiesel, natural gas, LNG, alcohol, etc. It was not clear whether the air engine would also be used as an ICE or whether two engines would be employed in the hybrid.

Engines will be available with 2, 4 and 6 cylinders. When the air tanks are empty the driver will be able to switch to fuel mode.

The car - MiniCAT - could cost around US$8,000 (Rs 350,000) in India and would have a range of around 180 miles (300 km) between refuels. The cost of a refill would be about US$2.00 (Rs 90).

Specifications: MiniCAT

The smallest and most innovative: three seats, minimal dimensions.

• Airbag, air conditioning, ABS, 3 seats, 1.5 m3.

• Dimensions: 2.65m, 1.62m, 1.64m

• Weight: 750 kg

• Maximum speed: 110 kmh

• Mileage: 200 - 300 km

• Maximum load: 270 Kg

• Recharging time: 4 hours (Mains connector)

• Recharge: 3 minutes (Air station)
